THE ART OF SOCIAL

THE ART OF SOCIAL

You’ll notice you will no longer find my current work on social media. For me, social media was a way for me to perform in unhealthy ways and place my worth in levels of interaction through likes, comments, and shares. Here, there’s nowhere to like, nowhere to comment, and nowhere to respond. It’s just me. Sharing my favorite work. Telling the stories that go along with it. I injured my shoulder recently. It wasn’t a bad injury, but it was just enough to force me to slow down. Honestly, I’m thankful for it. I didn’t realize how much I was distracting myself with “things” instead of focusing on the Lord and the work He is doing in my life. I can actively feel myself entering a new season which is very intimidating, but also so exciting. More on that later. (August 03, 2022)

Aesthetic is important. I was talking to my roommate who definitely leans towards logic vs. emotion, and even he was recognizing the importance of aesthetic in experiencing beautiful things. Through serving on a worship team in the past, I’ve learned it’s all about removing distractions. But, isn’t that a social commentary all within itself? Removing distractions…

Weddings are what I typically photograph, but what I’m truly passionate about is photographing people. The opportunity to serve is so important for me, and I truly feel God has given me an emotional intelligence that propels my heart towards helping others feel comfortable to be photographed. No, that does not always mean the process will be comfortable, but it’s my goal to take photos of real people, in real situations, telling their real stories, and portraying their real emotions. Nothing fabricated.

If I could encourage you with anything, allow me to encourage you with this – give up the things that you know are disrupting your peace. For me, I believe true peace is found in Jesus Christ. My goal is to give up everything that takes me away from Him. I’ve learned that “things” just aren’t worth it.

Candace (pictured) and I went to college together, but her and I rarely interacted. When we did, it was through Instagram about either the enneagram or our small businesses. It was evident at their New Jersey wedding that her and PJ both have an intense love of the Lord and the community around them. I’m blessed to have been a part of their day.

I made the recent decision to start asking friends on film photo dates. I want to get better at film. Though I feel I’m good at editing, there’s something about the raw coloring of film that I absolutely love. My hope is to start offering film only sessions to clients when I’m confident enough in my abilities.

This photo was taken on film, a medium that I’m starting to fall in love with. Elle didn’t know that Lucas would be proposing to her less than an hour after this was taken. Even though it’s before their actual engagement, it’s easily my favorite photo of the day – and potentially my favorite photo on film.
